Te Anau netball fans are excited to host the Southern Steel netball team this weekend.
The team are taking a break from their training schedule to spend a weekend connecting with the local community.
They will participate in a series of open sessions including netball games, drills and challenges, and a potluck dinner.
Fiordland Netball Club president Sarah McDonald says time spent with the Steel will give a boost to netball players in Te Anau.

“There are so many young kids here that are netball fanatics. They go to all the games, so to be able to actually meet and talk to the Steel will be amazing.”
“It’s great that it’s happening at the start of the season too. It will be getting everyone excited to get back into it.”
McDonald says the team will spend time mentoring local college teams one-on-on, as well as passing on tips and tricks of the trade.
She says the events over the weekend are open to the public, not just for experienced netball players, and encourages everyone to come along.
Lana Winders, CEO of Netball South, says the aim of the weekend is for the Steel to have some fun with the local community.
“The Steel have the potential to bring fun, excitement and joy to kids in the nooks and crannies of Southland, and it will be a lot of fun for Te Anau.”
“We are mindful that Te Anau has been hit quite hard by border closures and international tourism taking a dive, so we wanted to target the town as one to visit.”
The sessions are still able to go ahead under the ‘Red’ traffic light setting.
The Steel will be based out of the Fiordland Community Events Centre over the weekend, with activities starting at 4pm on Friday.
All sessions over the weekend are free of charge but require prior registration.
