One person has died, and another airlifted to hospital with moderate injuries, following a two-vehicle crash at Mataura early this morning (11 Feb).

Emergency services were called to the incident, near the intersection with Cardigan Bay Road, at around 3:30am.

State Highway 1 was closed until 9.48am, while the Serious Crash Unit examined the scene. 

Meanwhile a second crash, north of Glendhu Road, briefly closed SH1 again at 11.20am before reopening half an hour later.
