The Winton-Lorneville Highway has reopened from Gap Road West to Dejoux Road, following the cleanup of a large spill of bitumen.


A truck carrying the bitumen crashed at 6am, spilling the substance all over State Highway 6. 


A police spokesperson said it is not clear at this stage how the single-vehicle crash occurred.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

 

No other vehicles were involved.

 

The NZ Police announced the road had reopened just before 12.30pm.

Meanwhile, another section of State Highway 6 on North Road at Waikiwi has also been reopened after it was closed about 8.45am following a three car collision.


There was a full turn out of emergency services to attend to people with minor injuries and clear the highway. That section of road reopened about 10.30am.
