A missing dog has an entire southern community on the lookout as Te Anau residents rally behind their local pharmacist George Batchelor's efforts to track his family's runaway.

The popular pharmist's apricot coloured spoodle went missing from its Sinclair Road/Milford Road home on Wednesday evening (22 Nov).

“We believe that she ran off chasing rabbits with her mate [also a spoodle], who came home tired and guilty about 10pm Wednesday night,” Batchelor posted on Facebook.

The Batchelors, along with their neighbours and local farmers have now searched all the immediate surroundings of their property to no avail.

Fiordland Aero Club members in their microlites also joined in the search.

Local photographer and drone operator, Douglas Thorne said he didn't hesitate to drop everything to help when he heard there was a search on.

"He is such a nice local who does so much for the community."

"That's the great thing about Te Anau, you help each other," Thorne said.

Renowned Nelson dog tracker, Don Schwass, has also been enlisted onto the case.

Schwass has been successfully tracking and finding missing dogs for more than 20 years.

He has also developed software that helps predict where missing dogs might go, and is now using it to help track down Te Anau's missing Eliza.

“He's told us not to despair and that the dogs often take 7 to 11 days to be spotted or return home," Balchelor said.

Balchelor said on Facebook that they had been totally blown away by the local support.

"People had been driving up and down Milford Road looking for our dog, or even for possible signs of an accident,” he said.

Missing dog notices are now posted all over town.

Any sightings can be reported to the pharmacy in Te Anau (03) 249 9268, the Te Anau Community Facebook Page, or to George Batchelor on Messenger.
