The United Fire Brigades Association annual Waterway Challenge will be held at Tulloch Park in Mataura this Saturday, 22 January.
The Challenge has run since 1885 and tests firefighters on hose-running and pump-operating skills in a fun, safe, and competitive environment. Nineteen different setups at the event will cover both rural and urban approaches to firefighting.
Mossburn Volunteer Fire Brigade Chief Lance Hellewell says their brigade has two teams competing in the event this year.
“There’s going to be a fair bit of competition between them. We’ve got a new team who will be looking to push the old boys out. The other team, they’re really experienced, so they’ll know what they’re doing.”
He says the event is great to attend as a spectator, to see Southland’s firefighting skills on display.
“It’s well worth shooting down there if you’ve got the time. It’s quite spectacular really what they can do.”
This year’s event will also see South Island teams from Wyndham, Balclutha, Mataura, Kaitangata, Cromwell, Ashburton, Greymouth and Brunner and Volunteer Fire Brigades.
The Challenge will include both highly experienced volunteer firefighters, and those new to the role.
