A serious crash has closed the Milford Road (SH94) just south of the Homer Tunnel.

The crash, between the Homer Tunnel and Monkey Creek, involved three motorcycles and occured about 10.50am today (7 Jan).

Police and emergency services are now at the scene.

NZTA advise the road is unlikely to reopen until 6.30pm today.

Motorists travelling to or from Milford Sound should postpone travel and expect delays.

The Southland App understands that several tourist companies who operate bus services to Milford Sound have had to return to Te Anau.
