NZTA has advised that due to avalanche activity, the Milford Road will remain closed today and is "highly likely to remain closed until Thursday or Friday."

Fiordland Business Association chairperson Nathan Benfell said while the situation was not ideal, everyone's safety remained paramount.

Benfell said that while the big drawcards may be struggling due to the conditions, there was still plenty of indoor and outdoor activities that remained open in and around Te Anau, including the glow worm caves, heritage and jet boat rides, the cinema, escape rooms and machinery museum.

NZTA expects further snow will impact the Milford Road overnight (13 Jun) and throughout Tuesday and Wednesday and that reopening of road (or for convoys) through to Milford Sound will be dependent on snow clearing progress over a widespread length of road over the next few days.
