Indoor skatepark for Invercargill?

A community meeting has been organised by a group keen to support young skateboarders in the south.

The meeting will be held this Sunday, 8 August, at 3.30pm at South Alive in Grace Street, Invercargill to discuss the future for the Invercargill Skateboarding Group.

The group's ultimate goal is to build an indoor skatepark in Invercargill.

Topics for discussion include finding a formal club name plus funding and sponsorship plus addresses from guest speakers.

Skateboarding became an Olympic sport for the first time at Tokyo 2020, being held this month. The men's park final is at 3.30pm today.

Yesterday, 12-year-old Kokona Hiraki took silver in the women's park final, becoming Japan’s youngest ever Olympic medallist and the youngest Olympic medallist of any nationality since French rowing cox Noel Vandernotte in 1936.

The park and street events have been dominated by young teenagers, particularly Japanese teenagers, winning the three golds up for grabs so far and five medals.

Brazil skaters have two silvers and the US and Great Britain one bronze each, including bronze in the women's street for 13-year-old Sky Brown, who became GB's youngest ever medallist.

The combined age of the podium for the women's street event was just 44 years old.
