Southland's farmers have come to town today for a shared barbecue and hui with their urban neighbours.
Convoys of tractors could be seen making their way into Invercargill this morning for the Town and Country Freshwater hui organised by Federated Farmers and the Southland Chamber of Commerce.
The event, which kicked off at 12pm, is taking place at the Gala Street reserve until 2pm, where there is a free barbecue, live music and entertainment for the kids such as a farm animal petting area and bouncy castle.

Under the subtitle "We All Live off the Land", the idea of the get-together was to hear local speakers discuss the freshwater legislation that will affect all Southlanders, showcase successful community projects. Laura Douglas will speak about mental wellbeing and resilience. It is also being seen as an opportunity for town and country to chat over a shared lunch – proving that Southlanders come together when times are tough.
The event is sponsored by Southern Wide Real Estate. It is not a protest, nor is it an electioneering platform.
