A nationwide test of the Emergency Mobile Alert System is scheduled to take place this Sunday (26 May) between 6 and 7pm.
Conducted annually by the National Emergency Management Agency, the test is to ensure the system continues to work well.
Around 5 million mobile phones across New Zealand are expected to receive the alert.
Only phones capable of receiving alerts and who are within reception of a cell tower at the time of the test will receive the alert.
Most phone purchased after 2017 should be capable, so long as they are running up-to-date software.
There is no need to download an app or subscribe to a service to receive the alert.
