Continuing our Year of Action!
Hedgehope School is a fabulously modern and truly up to date, future focussed environment bursting with resources and wonder.
Our student whanau are curious, dazzled and hugely appreciative of our learning spaces and resources that the BOT and PTA have tirelessly supported.
Student efficacy and agency gives powerful voices to students to lead their own learning.
We have 3 classes of 47 students, who all love to learn!
We all REACH for Greatness in everything we do!
Hedgehope School proudly supported by Fiordland Escapes
At Hedgehope School students are learning about citizenship, environment, their local area, community, collaboration, history, migration, planning, reflection, empathy, relationships with landowners, partners and interest groups, complexities involved with a sustainable compass.
We are into our third year of suppression and advocacy at Sherwood Forest.
Students are also developing a native plant nursery, launching businesses and currently editing and animating their filmi script for an entertaining documentary about the history of Hedgehope area through the lens of migration.
We are incredibly lucky to have received Creatives in Schools and Grants for Good funding to learn with professional film maker Samantha Robertson (REECE) and Jeromy Van Riel as we are about to complete our Matamata carving with the addition of his master Te Rakituaneke statue.
We truly value the many partners that support our philosophy, projects and students so passionately.
We are a proud Silver Enviro School that will bring all of our learning together for our Green Gold Award towards the end of this term.
The Integrated curriculum learning areas included in this project are literacy, maths, science, technology, social studies/history, Health/PE, Visual Arts.
Last week we launched Term 3 with our very own Hedgehope Olympics.
This was a week of collaboration, encouragement, team work, integrated curriculum and challenge.
Our incredible PALs Leaders supported by Active Southland and the teaching team devised Hedgehope’s Olympic Games.
Five teams choose to learn about 5 different countries and then develop a uniform, flags, songs, chants and dance routines for a week of sports.
On Monday we hosted an Olympic Opening Ceremony, including Olympic Torches.
On Tuesday the teams competed for points and additional REACH Values points at the Gore Multiplex.
The competition included a dance routine on ice, archery, laser tag, soccer, basketball, soccer darts and then swimming.
On Wednesday we enjoyed Invercargill Stadium and Velodrome for the following events - cycling on the Velodrome, rock climbing, squash, volleyball and basketball.
Endurance was the key on Thursday as we enjoyed dressage at Browns Arena and then gymnastics, hockey and cricket at Winton Netball Courts.
The points were tight throughout the week! Gold, Silver and Bronze placings changed daily.
It was worth the endurance and dedication as not only were there medals and certificates to win but also a financial incentive in the form of ‘Banqer’ Dollars.
A little fatigued on Friday morning, but still all buzzing about the week and events that they had competed in, the teams had to make a digital book including reflections from each team member using Book Creator prior to the Award and the Closing Ceremony
While the reflection was going on, nine students whizzed away to The Ascot Hotel to present at the NETS Conference to around 200 science, higher educational institutes and NGO employees about the learning and impact they are making in our local area.
The students planned their 9 minute speech and presentation last term and had little time to practise during Olympic events in the week, but they stood proud and delivered to the room confidently.
Week 1 was incredible and has provided us with so much raw data, analysis, and experience to engage deeply across the curriculum for the duration of the actual Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Hedgehope School is competitive, enduring, but also kind and encouraging!
We are back to our normal routine at school this week but the learning and engagement across the curriculum is incredible!
The rest of the term is just as engaging at school.
Leadership is still a key focus as our chefs prepare for student calving meals as well as continuing their additional tasks alongside a challenging term of integration that is literacy and numeracy rich.
Some time soon we will also have a date for the red carpet launch of our documentary, once students have completed editing and animation with Sam from REECE.
We may be small but we can achieve because we believe anything is possible with effort!
Please get in touch if you would like to purchase any Native Seedlings!
Hedgehope is full of energy!
While we are adventurous and find learning everywhere in our community, we are passionate about creating literate, numerate, empathetic, critical thinking problem solvers that are proud of their community and environment.
Our mornings are rich with literacy and numeracy in our 3 classes (meeting and exceeding the newly prescribed 1 hour a day reading, writing and maths) through engaging, relevant and integrated learning.
Our students are coached by 4 incredibly talented and inspiring teachers and 2 learning supports.
We are a happily connected whanau!
We all REACH for Greatness in everything we do!
