Celebrating Southland Schools
08 August 2023, 8:40 PM
Hedgehope School is a fabulously modern and truly up to date, future focussed environment bursting with resources and wonder.
Our student whanau are curious, dazzled and hugely appreciative of our learning spaces and resources that the BOT and PTA have tirelessly supported.
Student efficacy and agency gives powerful voices to students to lead their own learning.
We have 3 classes of 43 students, all love to learn!
We all REACH for Greatness in everything we do!
At Hedgehope School students are learning about citizenship, environment, their local area, community, collaboration, planning, reflection, empathy, relationships with landowners, partners and interest groups, complexities involved with a sustainable compass.
Students collaborate with advocacy projects or suppression actions in our local forest on a weekly basis to set and service traps and bait stations, manage invasive flora, collect seeds for future propagation and carry out maintenance.
They have also created websites and a regular news broadcast called “Sherwood Sharp”.
This is The link to Episode 3 of Sherwood Sharp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZACdm03rDw.
Students have also enjoyed carving Matamata with Jeromy Van Riel supported by Hokonui Runanga, creating visual art works with Stephanie MacDonald.
The Integrated curriculum learning areas included in this project are literacy, maths, science, technology, social studies/history, Health/PE, Visual Arts.
Phase 1 of Matamata Sculpture is complete.
Art works and Mural created with Stephanie MacDonald.
It's never too cold or wet for us to get out and take action in Sherwood Forest.
We are really proud of our Enviro Schools journey and support we receive from Josh Sullivan, Rodney Trainor (Hokonui Runanga) and the team at Environment Southland.

Three teams entered The Social Science Fair, this one received a Merit.
One of our highly motivated Year 8’s, Gretchen also received her Bronze Science Badge.
Last Term we enjoyed The Wonder Project Rocket Challenge so much that we have launched again with The Wonder Project Wind Challenge in conjunction with incredible local projects.
We are really excited to be working with Murihiku Regeneration Project to learn about hydrogen cells and envisioning a sustainable future for the area through their Mine Craft project and collaborating with Otago University Science Professors and Sue Galloway on Electromagnetics and circuitry.
Students are currently busy completing Science Investigation Cycles to present at Southland Science Fair.
Our Chefs are back in the kitchen under a new brand name, to make sure all of our students have two hot and healthy lunches a week during the busy calving time.
Our parent organised and senior student coached Hedgehog Quick 6 Netball team have had an epic first season and are really excited about participating in Netty Fest!
We all had a fabulous time celebrating Matariki, Matamata, Red White and Black Day for SCH, The past, present and future with a challenging climb up East Peak, followed by a Roast Lunch with our community.
We also farewelled Whaea Cheryl after 30 plus years teaching in various schools around the country.
Our students are so excited to catch up with her in her new role as Senior Living Species Officer.
While we are adventurous and find learning everywhere in our community, we are passionate about creating literate, numerate, empathetic, critical thinking problem solvers that are proud of their community and environment.
Our students are coached by 4 incredibly talented and inspiring teachers and 2 learning supports.
We are a happily connected whanau!
We all REACH for Greatness in everything we do!
