Celebrating Southland Schools
06 June 2024, 9:30 PM
Kia ora Southland App readers,
Welcome to Term 2 in class action at Hauroko Valley Primary School.
On behalf of Hauroko Valley Primary School, we thank our families for supporting the Blackmount Trail Ride.
This was a monumental day for us all, including our riders, enjoying the contrasting, yet complementary scenery across various terrain.
Thank you to Brendon and HVP’s Home and School team for their huge contributions organising this large-scale fundraising event.
To our landowners, the Gray, Powell, and Slee families, thank you for enabling access to phenomenal tracks for our riders.
What a difference you all make to our school!
If you want to join us in 2025 - save the date - Saturday 15th March.
This Term we continue to focus on developing our Structured Literacy programmes in spelling and reading.
The impact of this learning is visible within our Literacy teaching and learning.
Each group of learners develops knowledge of alphabetic principles, spelling concepts, decoding, encoding, and fingerspelling to build understanding and skills.
A first for HVP was a pair competing in the Southland Secondary School Indoor Bowls Championships.
Well done to Jonty and Carter who represented Hauroko Valley Primary with pride.
They were impressive with the precision of their bowls, the adjustment of the weight or speed, and being tactical in positioning close to the jack.

Several Year 5-8 students spent time preparing their Social Science boards for presentation at Southland’s Social Science Fair in Invercargill.
This was a home and school partnership.
At school individuals or pairs were supported by Mrs Harris throughout with content and execution.
At home, we thank our families for supporting their child/ren to complete projects to high standards of presentation.
Topics were varied and reflected the interests our learners have in their out-of-school lives. Congratulations to all those who completed their boards and the accolades received thanks to either individual or pair hard work.
Our Year 7&8 classes are attending Technology weekly to grow skills, knowledge, and understanding in cooking, sewing, and woodwork.
Fridays are likely a highlight of the week, as tasty treats are made to take home.
They also cook delicious lunches to enjoy the fruits of their labour!
In hand sewing our students are unpacking the technology process by designing and modifying softie creatures.
Our Seniors look forward to heading to Dunedin for National Young Leaders Day.
Staying overnight gives our Year 8s a taste of city life with adventures at Baldwin Street, Signal Hill, Toitu Otago Museum, and Moana Pool, to name a few.
The speakers at NYLD are inspirational leaders in their fields, who leave a lasting impression on our young leaders.
Meanwhile, our Year 7’s head to Invercargill to Adventure Southland to complete a Leadership Course.
They are provided with opportunities with facilitators guiding our tamariki through challenges that require the support of and for each other through low and then high ropes, and adventure-based learning.
Good Luck to Sam, Oliver, and Tomas who head to the Grand Final National Young Farmers, AgriKids in Hamilton.
We are excited to follow your journey, knowing you have secured your place for a second crack at this prestigious National Agricultural title.
Thank you to all those who have supported our team and their quest.
As always, we thank you for following our in-class action through the Fiordland Advocate/Southland App and look forward to keeping you up to date with Hauroko Happenings!
We are proud of our learning and know that the variety of opportunities, continue to build and extend our learners.
Until next time, ma te wa.
