Celebrating Southland Schools
26 February 2024, 7:55 PM
Kia ora Southland App readers,
Welcome to Term 1 at Hauroko Valley Primary School.
A Meet and Greet to welcome new students, families and staff to HVP was held on a stunning Summer afternoon.
It was fun, with families in our school houses.
Our school houses including Clifden, Orawia, Takitimu and Waiau participated in a range of fun activities, with our senior school leaders organising the equipment and range of games.
We extend a warm welcome to the Diack whanau, and welcome Goldie, Tanner, and Grace who join their siblings at HVP.
HVP is also excited to welcome Anna to Totara, teaching our year 5&6 class.
Athletics training is in full swing, as we prepare our tamariki for run, jump and throw activities.
Rethinking our athletics skill development thanks to the support of Active Southland - Mark, has supported a range of activities that are engaging with maximum participation of our learners.
We look forward to our Interschool Athletics, Western Southland Athletics and then for those that qualify, the journey to Southland Athletics.
Our Year 7&8 learners headed to Tuatapere for Environment Southland’s BioBlitz, a first for our local community.
This is a scientific race against time to count as many different species in the Tuatapere Domain as possible.
As part of Environmental Education, Science, and Technology our students spent time learning about the rich diversity of organisms (the birds, bats, insects, spiders, fish and fungi) that live in the Tuatapere area.
Thank you to hosts Waiau Area School and organiser Catriona from E.S for inviting us to explore our local space.
The AgriKids Otago/Southland Regional Finals were held recently and HVP was represented by two teams.
The Knowledgeables including Finley, Daniel and Maddi finished in the Top 10, and look forward to another crack in 2025.
The Southern Boys with Oliver, Sam and Tomas secured 1st place, so they head to Nationals in Hamilton in July.
Our Year 0-2’s joined in REAP Fundamental Movement where they exercised stability and balance, manipulative, locomotor, movement and body awareness.
These focuses support our younger learners to further develop knowledge and skills involved in moving their bodies, while also preparing for learning.
Key Competencies and School Values are also in action, as students show self management skills.
A highlight of Term 1 for our pupils is Teresa and Harold who visit in the Life Education Trust mobile classroom.
Our focus to start our Health Education Inquiry was Conflict Resolution.
Our children are learning to utilise their W.I.T.S as part of a strategy to support themselves and others.
Harold is well loved and our Junior Class thoroughly enjoyed their disco dance party!
12 of our Year 7&8 students competed in the Southland Secondary School Triathlon, thanks to the Southland Multisport Club for organising this event.
Our students enjoyed opportunities to compete as individuals or as a team.
Congratulations to our Mixed Year 8 team of Sienna, Tomas and Libby who were placed 2nd overall.
We are also proud of our students who gave it their all, demonstrating grit and perseverance throughout swimming, biking and running.
Thank You, Fiordland Advocate for providing us with an opportunity to share our in class action.
HVP is looking forward to catching up again with you all in Term 2.
Until then.
Mā te wā.
