Celebrating Southland Schools

CLASS ACTION: Hauroko Valley School

Kia ora Southland App readers,

Welcome to Term 3 at Hauroko Valley Primary School.

Our Young Farmers (AgriKids) are outstanding in their field literally!

In the July holidays two of our AgriKids teams competed at the 2023 National Young Farmers Grand Final in Timaru going head to head against 21 teams from throughout NZ.

The support our students received leading up to their showdown was exceptional.

Thanks to each family of each student for the additional home learning support.

To friends and family in attendance as support crew - thank you.

Thank you also to the support received with modules led as practice by several local friends and family and businesses.

We want to acknowledge the following for generous sponsorship for our AgriKid teams: NZ Adventures, Fowle Contracting Ltd, Takitimu Ag Limited, Farm Source Otautau, Tuatapere Lions Club and Clifden Rural Women’s.

Our teams “Southern Boys” of Tomas, Sam and Oliver all Year 7’s and “The 3 Western Girls” including Sophie, Sierra and Elly all Year 8’s competed in the race-off, modules, quiz and were judged on their presentation and conduct throughout the event.

Congratulations to our Year 8 team who gained 2nd place and to our Year 7 team who gained 3rd place!

A massive well done to Tomas on his selection as the AgriKids Contestant of the Year!

These results are phenomenal, and a testament to the work ethic, determination and collaboration each student contributed to their team.

Our Year 5&6 and Year 7&8 students eagerly participated in the EIS technology challenge hosted by Waianiwa Primary School.

One of our Year 5&6 teams including Ruby, Angus, MJ and Jonty won their section thanks to completing the challenges, within set time frames to meet the design brief.

Ka rawe!

A first for our school was the involvement of several of our Year 7&8 students in Basketball.

Our team has been training at Waiau Area School, thanks to the support of WAS Senior Students with special mention to Coach Korbyn.

Our students have thrived under your guidance and support, learning new skills and drills.

We are grateful to Claire from Waiau Area School for inviting us to join this fabulous initiative.

A well organised and fun tournament was held at Stadium Southland, Invercargill, involving Western Southland Year 7&8’s.

Thanks to Sally for supporting our learners with this opportunity for our students to extend their repertoire of skills

We are busy preparing for the Miharo Murihiku Polyfest.

To support our journey we have the expertise of the multi-talented Whaea Cilla.

We are incredibly excited to be learning new waiata under her tutelage.

This year we will be on stage on Friday 25th August, 11.20am-11.40pm.

Although the weather has been a bit wintery of late with thunder, hail and possible snow sightings.

All classes are working hard on their writing, extending knowledge of sentence styles.

We are already seeing results of our Structured Literacy learning of concepts, in all areas of Literacy.

Our learners are looking forward to 2023’s NZMaths Week only a few days away where the Daily Dollar and Survivor Series is often a favourite challenge to complete!

Stay warm, until our next adventures. Mā te wā.

On behalf of HVP School,

Julia Waikato
