Celebrating Southland Schools
02 March 2023, 8:08 PM
Kia ora Southland App readers,
Welcome to a new year!
It’s hard to believe we’ve been back in action at school for one month!
During this time our students have been engaging in all areas of the curriculum.
This year for our Literacy, we are showcasing our fantastic writers for everyone to see.
Each class has been given a large photo frame to place a "Writer of the Week" in.
You can check out each week's fantastic writers in our staffroom window!
As part of our Mathematics teaching our tamariki have been completing Statistical Investigations following the Data Detective Cycle Process; given this is a Census year, there is relevance of learning.
Our learners have been involved in Healthy Active Learning with Active Southland.
Time has been spent rethinking our athletics activities.
The focus on developing fundamental skills through a range of activities has improved our students' abilities in preparation for field events.
We look forward to our Interschool Athletics with Waiau Area School early March.
Both Matai and Totara classes wore watch type devices for a week.
These tracked their exercise and sleep as part of our participation in Massey Uni’s evaluation study.
This year our staff and students are learning about “Te Whare Tapa Wha” Mason Durie's model of well being or hauora.
Each class has created their own replica model, and is adding what this looks like, feels like and sounds like within their class.
Harold and Teresa spent time with classes, developing our Health Education programmes, with a focus on Relationships.
Our Year 5&6 students eagerly trialled for HVP’s rippa rugby with selections made to represent at Southland’s Rippa Rugby Carnival.
Superb team work by Louie, Boe, Fergal, Jonty, Angus, Carter and Cassie, Maddi, Aydee, Tori, Lola and Ruby.
Thanks to Kirsty for training our team with support from Rob and Joe on game day.
Rata class joined the Black Fern’s at Riverton meeting Amy du Plessis, Amy Rule and Kendra Cocksedge.
There were amazing testimonies from these three superstar rugby players, along with a depth of questions asked by our students.
Each student managed to get multiple photographs and autographs, including getting up close and personal with gold medals and ‘Nancy’ the Womens Rugby World Cup.
An incredible contingent of 15 students in Years 7&8 entered Southland’s Secondary School Triathlon.
Lily and Jake competed in the individual event, while we had students in Year 7 and 8 teams.
Congratulations to Jake for placing 3rd in Year 7 boys, Hugo, George and Cormac who placed 3rd in the Year 8 boys event and to our mixed Year 7 team of Libby, Tomas and Sienna who placed 1st!
The Aotearoa History Curriculum is in action starting our year learning about Te Tiriti o te Waitangi.
The connection between this and classrooms is through considerations of Participation, Partnership and Protection, all aspects incorporated into a class code or treaty.
There are strong links throughout the curriculum also aligning with these principles.
We are breathing life to this through our H.V.P.S School Values.
Opportunities for learning are everywhere and we seek these out to provide our students with a range of relevant and localised learning experiences.
Coming up we look forward to Western Southland Swimming Sports, Western Athletics, Southland Athletics, Technology, School Photos, Discovery Time each Thursday for our 4 year old friends and Year 1-3’s, Otago/Southland Agrikids and shortly The Blackmount Trail Ride.
We look forward to catching up again in Term 2, Until then, please join us for our 2023 Blackmount Trail Ride.
This is Hauroko Valley Primary School’s major fundraiser.
If you would like to join us for a fun family filled day on Saturday 11th March - come along.
We are extremely grateful to our Home and School team for their mammoth organisation of this event.
Thanks to our generous sponsors, without you, we couldn’t do what we do for our children.
Your support makes a BIG difference to our little school.
Ma te wa.
