Celebrating Southland Schools

CLASS ACTION: Hauroko Valley School

-

Term 4 is here and it’s action packed with several events on the calendar providing a range of engaging opportunities.

To end the year we competed in our Inter-school Athletics with Waiau Area School; Western Southland Athletics with a team of 40 students and soon 15 of our tamariki head to represent W.S at Southland Athletics, Invercargill.

Congratulations to our students that have excelled in track and/or field events.

Two teams of students enjoyed their golfing experiences at the Western Southland Competition at Riverton’s Golf Course.

Both teams including our Year 5&6 - Jonty, Cassie, Louie and Maddi gained 8th place enabling them to head to the final at Drummond Golf Course.

The Year 7&8 team of Lily, Ewan, Harry and Sophie also performed well achieving 6th and securing a place at the Southland Final, later on this month.

Thanks to Melissa, Kate and Nic we have two students playing tennis competitively, having attended the Western Southland tennis day.

They headed to the Waihopai Tennis Courts, Invercargill for the Southland Primary School Tennis Championships.

Both Boe and Louie played well, learnt lots and networked with other keen tennis players, so a fantastic experience!

We welcomed the opportunity to participate in the EIS Technology Challenge at Waianiwa School.

Our original teams were unable to attend, due to a clash with athletics, however our Plan B team members ably stepped up.

Lots of problem solving, collaboration and challenge was met by our Year 5&6 team of Daniel, Sam, Louie and Dusty.

While Axel, Tomas, Sierra and Lucy also performed well.

Thanks to Matt for leading this Technological learning.

HVP’s Pet Day is always a highlight on our calendar as our friends and family join together to celebrate our annual showcase of animals.

A range of pets were in attendance proudly displayed by our tamariki.

The creations were also outstanding!

Obviously hours had been spent preparing lego, mini farm scenes, decorated cupcakes, recycled creations and decorated rocks for presentation of talents.

Thanks to our Home and School for their support of Pet Day and to our Guest Judges for invaluable contributions.

We look forward to doing it all again next year.

This Term we have two school camps with our Year 5&6 students heading to Central Otago with a focus on Aotearoa Histories and Health & Physical Education - Well Being.

The first day is spent at Arrowtown exploring Central District Lakes Museum experiencing a traditional classroom, learning about Technologies and Tools utilized by Chinese Gold Miners and finishing by searching for gold in the Arrow River.

Our second day involves sailing, kayaking and SUP at McNulty's Inlet where we receive tuition from Cromwell College Aquatics Instructors to build our water skills.

To conclude our camp we engage in minigolf, frisbee golf and hydroslide challenges as part of Five Ways to Wellbeing.

Meanwhile, our Year 7&8 leaders are walking the Hump Ridge Track as part of Education Outside The Classroom.

The Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track is a 3 day loop walk that takes hikers along the South coast of New Zealand, up to the subalpine zone of the Hump Ridge, and over historic viaducts in the heart of native forest.

Our learners will discover beautiful flora & fauna and natural bird life, while also learning about the history of the old Port Craig Sawmill and the artifacts that still reside.

We are extremely grateful to the Hump Ridge Track Trust for their support enabling our tamariki to experience our local Great Walk.

This week Libby and Tomas join the Waiau Rivercare Group at the Environment Southland Community Award Prize Giving.

These two students have represented Hauroko Valley Primary with such articulate confidence.

They have continued to impress with their natural abilities to engage in conversation, with a variety of people passionately sharing their connections to the Waiau River and the awa’s value to their families through the generations.

To end our year all students are preparing for HVP’s school production.

This year we have reworked a New Zealand children's narrative “Mrs Windyflax and the Pungapeople.” creating a play with a range of local and kiwi characters.

A collaboration of ideas from akonga and kaiako ensures we ‘hit the mark’ with all incorporating a range of humour to suit our audience.

We can’t wait to share our learning with our families and friends at the Tuatapere RSA later on in December.

2022 concludes with our tamariki consistently striving to “Always Our Best/Tonu tou tatou pai” as learning continues in classrooms.

We regularly celebrate the progress and achievements our learners have in their reading, writing and math.

We look forward to sharing more of our ‘best’ moments with our in class action next year.

Ka kite ano, Hauroko Valley Primary School learners.
