CLASS ACTION: Hauroko Valley School

Kowhai

Our Year 1&2 learners have been going for lots of cross country training, as well as reading up a storm.

They created some fantastic writing with lots of neat stories about duck shooting.

For Visual Arts Kowhai have been creating self portraits using photos of themselves as a guide.

We have used charcoal, which is lots of fun, but can get very messy especially, if you itch your nose.

Check out a few of our charcoal self portraits.

Matai

We have been training hard for cross country by speed training and completing long slow distances.

Our Year 2-4 students are feeling fitter and recognising the difference from when we started training.

Matai class are our schools experts in New Zealand Sign Language.

They know how to answer “how are you?” say “thank you” and “please” and ask “how are you?” and say “Good afternoon Miss Ross”.

Matai have added in the sign for “and” so we can now add in two feelings to answer “how are you?”

Totara

Totara have been investigating the human nervous system, researching the role of neuron cells in the brain.

These are fascinating cells and relate to how we think, feel and communicate.

Our Year 4-6’s have learnt that there are billions of neurons inside our brains, which burn 25% of our daily food intake. They are also some of the longest living cells in the body.

Check out these great snapshots of team work and our boys with their prototypes.

Rata

On the 18th of May 2022, Rata class experienced something that most kids our age don’t.

We had the opportunity to dig for Toheroa with NZ Tik Tok star Terressa Kollat.

We were lucky enough to be granted permission, thanks to Tautaki o Titi Marae to forage for toheroas known as the long tongue; a seafood delicacy from Oreti Beach.

Our Year 7&8’s are super grateful to Terressa and her whanau for sharing their love of the outdoors and how to live off the land.

We were accompanied by TV3, The Hui who filmed Terressa as she shared with us how to be kaitiaki of our environment.

Terressa and her whanau kindly invited us to an incredible feast of kai moana.

How lucky are we?

It was a very exciting time for us, we really enjoyed this unique kiwi experience.

We look forward to sharing more of our classes learning with you later on in Term 3.

Ka kite ano.
