CLASS ACTION: Hauroko Valley School

Kia ora and welcome to Hauroko Valley Primary School in class action where we have been…

inquirers, investigators, collaborators, turn takers, news reporters, experimenters, creators!

Term 4

It is fantastic to be back together for learning and with such stunning Spring weather requiring sunhats and sunblock!

Our final Term for 2021 is action-packed with several events planned to end our time together.

Unfortunately a few of our events have changed in format; we have postponed a few until 2022 or cancelled as they are unable to continue in their present format.

Throughout this time, our students, staff and families have continued to adapt to the changing environment by thinking outside the box, being resilient and collaborating.

In class our Year 6-8 students have been researching inspiration to add more play options for Hauroko Valley Primary School children.

This has involved viewing the school environment and considering ways to use our space wisely.

Several have calculated space and costs, organised locations that are safe while other activities take place alongside.

Consideration has been given to multiplayer and fun activities to benefit our 5-13 year olds.

Ideas have included an obstacle course, cricket pitch, mini-golf, and table tennis for physical activity.

We also have some well being spaces looking to be created to provide options to relax and enjoy the surroundings including a bench seat, mural and edible garden.

These opportunities for learners to have student agency within a meaningful context really do make a significant difference to learning.

Hauroko Valley learners are active in sports including Western Southland Touch Competition with teams in all levels, and several representatives in Western Touch.

We look forward to swimming sessions with Brittney from Johnston Waters as we further develop our stamina and skills in the pool.

This will culminate in a Swimming Sports for our students to showcase their swimming abilities while also gaining house points for Clifden, Orawia, Takitimu and Waiau.

Our Year 7&8 golf teams competed in the Western Southland Golf Tournament securing a place in the Southland Final later on this Term.

Our Year 7&8 “Have A Go” programme has Squash Development with the guidance of Bruce from Squash Southland and support of Nic Mitchell, and others from our local club and community.

Next week we welcome Dr Sue Galloway, an amazing Science facilitator supporting our learners to think like a scientist.

Our Year 7&8 students will have opportunities to make bioplastic from potato starch, investigate the power of oxygen, develop knowledge of the periodic table, and dig into archaeology.

Meanwhile the Year 1-5 students are experimenting with States of Matter - solids, liquids and gas along with chemical reaction experiments!

Hauroko Valley Writers are Rockstars!

Our School is the first in Southland to have Professional Learning for our community in Writing through (WTE) known as Write That Essay.

This whole-school method for teaching writing is demonstrating a phenomenal agent of change in the classroom.

It is exciting to see such amazing improvements in the achievements of our writers over our journey so far.

Not only are our writers confident, fluent and highly motivated!

They are fluent in the use of sentence types and structuring paragraphs.

Thanks for joining us on our learning journey.

We look forward to reconnecting with you all in the New Year.

If you would like to see our learners in action, please check us out on Facebook or through our website - www.haurokovalley.school.nz

Until next time.

Nga mihi nui, Julia Waikato, Principal/Tumuaki

P.S. Please save the date for the Blackmount Trail Ride - Saturday 12th March 2022.

This is a fabulous fun filled family day out!

See you there!
