Te Anau's tennis club is gearing up for a big night with snacks and a big screen for locals to cheer on tennis sensation Lulu Sun as she competes in the Wimbleton quarter-finals.
Sun, 23, has already made New Zealand tennis history by becoming just the second New Zealander to ever make it to round of 16 at Wimbledon. In 1959, Māori tennis legend Dame Ruia Morrison made it to the fourth round at Wimbleton.
Born in Te Anau, Sun moved to Switzerland when she was 5 but still returns to Fiordland to visit family. She will also represent New Zealand in this year's Paris Olympics.
Te Anau Tennis president Greg Sheppard said Sun's achievement was incredible and 'uncharted territory' as the club organises a watch party at the local squash club to cheer her on.
He expected 30 to 40 people would turn out, but everyone was welcome and dressing-up in a tennis related theme encouraged.
There's been a bit of a media interest now and we've got some TV crews turning up, Sheppard said, hinting that Seven Sharp's Hilary Barry may also be making an appearance.
Among the food on offer could be some of the Sheppard family's famous 'sponge drops'. The iconic morsel, a creation perfected by Sheppard's late grandmother, usually only makes an appearance at the club's annual Distinction Hotels Te Anau Tennis Invitational.
Sheppard said if Sun was to win the quarter final celebrations would just get bigger and bigger.
"[And] if she gets through to the final there could be something big going on."
Left-handed Sun plays Croatia's Donna Vekic on Wimbledon's court 1 after midnight tonight (10 Jul).
The match will be able to be watched live on both TVNZ 1 and TVNZ+.
