Splash Palace closes new raft slide indefinitely Sir Tim Shadbolt at the grand opening in April

Splash Palace's brand new raft slide has closed until further notice due to a structural issue with one of the supporting columns.

Invercargill City Council's leisure and recreation Steve Gibling said although the column is not critical it will need to be replaced.

"The column had shifted a few millimetres towards the top," Gibling says.

"The safety of our users is paramount in our decision making and our staff were quick to shut down the raft slide when they were notified yesterday afternoon."

The remaining two body slides have been assessed and are safe to ride while the raft slide is being repaired.

It is unclear how long the column will take to be replaced, he said

The 101-metre raft slide, coloured red and yellow, only opened at the Invercargill pool in April, along two body slides, measuring 69m and 79m and coloured green and blue.

It features a large sphere section, which raft riders shoot into.

The slides cost $3.2 million in total, some $300,000 over budget and three months late due to Covid.

They were manufactured in Turkey and needed 230 cubic metres of concrete and 40 tonnes of reinforcing steel to hold the weight of the slides and swimmers.
