Wyndham volunteer Margaret McKelvie has been honoured with a Southland District Council (SDC) Community Service Award for her contribution to the Wyndham Rest Home and wider community.

McKelvie received the award from SDC Mayor Christine Menzies during a ceremony at Wyndham on Thursday 27 April.

Her voluntary involvement with the community rest home now spans over a decade, Menzies said.

“She has given freely of her time to develop and extend their vegetable gardens and flower beds,” she said.

“She actively works to encourage residents to enjoy the grounds and assist with gardening activities and works tirelessly, in all weathers, preparing garden beds, maintaining plantings and delivering end products to the home.”

The vegetable gardens and three tunnel houses supplied the rest home kitchen with fresh produce for a large part of the year.

“There is always food for the birds and cats too.”

McKelvie’s work was appreciated by the management of the rest home and contributes to the care and welfare of the residents.

“She is always willing to share her knowledge with anybody,” Menzies said.

“Margaret is very skilled in other areas using her historical knowledge to assist with setting up displays in the home of interest to the residents. She has assisted with craft activities, decorating of tables for special occasions, and provides floral displays and dining table flowers throughout the years.”

Her role extends to local youth, overseeing Duke of Edinburgh students from Menzies College who have worked in the grounds as part of their community service.

“Her contribution is invaluable and her loyal and cheerful service over many years is an inspiration to those around her,” Menzies said.

“Her volunteer efforts and generosity touch a lot of hearts in our community and she freely gives her time for whatever is asked of her.

“Above all, Margaret is a really humble person, has a big heart and endless energy.”

A past member of the Wyndham Historical society, McKelvie was involved in fundraising activities and displays in the former museum building.

“On behalf of the Waihopai Toetoe community board and the Southland District council we are proud to recognise Margaret as an outstanding citizen and very deserving of this community service award.”
