The Waikaia School family trail bike ride kicks its fifth year off this weekend (February 23-24).
Home and School, the group which runs the event, chairperson Megan Horrell is expecting up to about 200 people to turn up to the two day event at Waikaia’s Glenaray Station, Piano Flat.
“People get the hang of the trail one day and then they can try the next one out the next day.”
There are three trails available including the peewee, intermediate and main loop tracks.
“We run it as a family day out, where beginner riders can build their confidence and increase their skill level over the weekend.”
Usually about $4000 is raised at the event, which goes back into funding teaching hours for the 20 students at the school.
“We fundraise to support the learning of all our children by ensuring that the school is always staffed with two teachers, irrespective of role changes.”
Free overnight camping is available on site, as well as a cash-only barbeque.
Registrations open from 8.30am -1pm and the tracks will be open from 9am – 4pm both days - $30 entry for everyone over 5, under 5 year old ride for $10.
