A search and rescue operation has been launched on Lake Te Anau, near Blue Gum Point, following the discovery of an upturned kayak on the lake at around 3.15pm this afternoon (10 Jun).
Chris Musgrave from Cruise Te Anau said they were on their way home from one of their regular cruises when they found the kayak and debris about 200 meters from shore.
Debris included a paddle, stainless-steel flask and some fishing tackle.

"We did a search pattern straight away and called the Police", Musgrave said.
A Police spokesperson said they responded, along with local boats and a helicopter, however nothing further was discovered.
At 5.45pm the Search and Rescue team decided to regroup at the hanger, with Police saying it is now a 'watch and wait' situation.
