UPDATED: Police appeal for sightings of David WilsonDavid Wilson is wanted by police in relation to a "fleeing driver" incident in Te Anau this morning.

Police have named the man they have been searching for in relation to a "fleeing driver" incident in Te Anau this morning.

He is 51-year-old David Wilson.

Police are appealing for any information about his whereabouts. He is believed to be in possession of a firearm. Members of the public are advised that if they see him they should not approach him but call 111.

About 9.25am police attempted to stop a vehicle for a routine check in east Te Anau. The driver failed to stop and was pursued by police for about 30 minutes, during which time the vehicle was spiked. The driver abandoned the vehicle on State Highway 94 near Tutoko Lane and took off on foot.

Armed police have been searching for him ever since. The search has included the use of two helicopters. The police armed offenders squad and dog units have also been in attendance.

Residents in the area were told to stay indoors and keep their doors and vehicles locked. However, one resident said that, having contacted the police at 4.15pm, he was told the situation was resolved and they could go outside again. He was advised at 5.45pm that the advice was still to go inside and lock the door.

Police confirmed tonight that police teams would remain in the area overnight and would continue to speak with associates of Mr Wilson and into tomorrow until he is located.

Helicopters have been stood down.

"We have spoken to residents in the area today and will keep the community updated."

State Highway 94, between the intersections of Kakapo Road and Sandy Brown Road, was closed for much of the day. The New Zealand Transport Agency advised at 6.30pm the road had been reopened.

Police are not expecting to make any further updates tonight "unless he is located".

Video footage taken earlier today of the helicopter involved in the search.
