Police have arrested two men and seized guns, drugs, and a vehicle during raids in Invercargill and Mataura Island this week.
The searches were part of Operation Hawk, which targets illegal hunting and related crimes. Officers carried out four search warrants—three in Invercargill and one in Mataura Island—and found firearms, ammunition, methamphetamine, cannabis, and a four-wheel drive vehicle.
Southern District detectives helped with the operation.
Senior Constable Nicky Herbert said illegal hunting is dangerous and can harm people, property, and the environment. She added that having guns and drugs involved makes the situation even more risky.
Police say they’re committed to stopping illegal hunting and holding offenders accountable.
The two men face charges including illegal gun possession, reckless use of firearms, and trespassing on farmland to commit a crime. More charges may follow.
A 24-year-old man will appear in Gore District Court on 27 August. A 28-year-old man will return to Invercargill District Court on 16 September.
