Toxic algae has now been discovered in the Mataura River.
Environment Southland (ES) advises it has found elevated levels of the algae in the eastern Southland river at both Gore and Mataura Island Bridge.
This latest discovery adds to a number of Southland waterways carrying the toxic algae, including Waikaia River at Mahers Beach and Waikaia, and the Whitestone River downstream of Manapouri-Hillside.
River users and animals should avoid contact with any algal mats and remain alert for algal growth or mats of algae floating in the water.
If users or animals display adverse health symptoms after coming into contact with contaminated water, then a health professional should be contacted immediately.
