Toxic algae has been detected in the Aparima River at Thornbury, according to Environment Southland who regularly monitors Southland rivers.

Similar algae growth is currently present in other waterways in Southland, including the Upukerora River at Te Anau Milford Road and the Whitestone River downstream of Manapouri-Hillside Road.

The algae, which appear as dark green/brown slime on rocks or dark brown/black mats at the water’s edge, can pose serious health risks to both people and animals.

Key Points:

  • Avoid contact with the algae.
  • Keep dogs on leads and children away from affected areas.
  • Seek medical attention if you experience symptoms after contact.
  • Take pets to the vet immediately if they consume contaminated water.

ES recommends people stay informed and vigilant.
