Elevated levels of toxic algae have been found in the Waihopai River at Kennington.
This follows monitoring by Environment Southland.
Toxic algae also remains present in the Longridge Stream at Sandstone, near Balfour.
Toxic algae (benthic cyanobacteria) can be recognised in rivers and streams as a dark green/brown slime on rocks, or dark brown/black mats at the water’s edge.
Algae naturally occur in waterways and can flourish during hot and fine conditions, with low and stable flows.
Most algae are harmless. However, some species can produce toxins and rapidly bloom to harmful levels.
Environment Southland senior scientist Katie Blakemore said similar growth is likely occurring in other places along the Waihopai River, its tributaries, and other rivers in the region.
“Keep dogs on lead and children away from affected areas.”
These algae can produce toxins that are harmful to people and animals if swallowed, or through contact with skin. People and animals (dogs in particular) should avoid contact with the river and be mindful of the potential health risks, until health warnings are removed.
Users should be vigilant and avoid contact with this algae.
