Toxic Algae Detected in Whitestone River

Environment Southland has identified toxic algae in the Whitestone River, downstream of Manapouri-Hillside Road.

While algae are a natural part of waterways, certain species can produce harmful toxins, especially during stable river flows and fine weather.

Key Points:

  • Toxic algae appear as dark green or brown slime on rocks, or dark brown/black mats at the water’s edge.
  • Water users should avoid contact with these algae.
  • Environment Southland cannot monitor all areas, so similar algae may be present in other waterways.
  • Toxic algae pose significant health risks to humans and animals if ingested or through skin contact.
  • Keep dogs on leads and children away from affected areas.
  • Seek medical attention if you experience symptoms after contact with contaminated water.
  • Take pets to a vet immediately if they consume toxic algae or contaminated water.

Additionally, toxic algae alerts are in place for the Waihopai River upstream of Queen’s Drive and the Waiau River near the Excelsior Creek inflow.
