Toxic algae has now been found at Waikaia (Waikaia River), Mataura Island Bridge (Mataura River) and the Whitestone River downstream from Manapouri-Hillside.
This brings to seven, the number of sites recording high levels of the algae, and follows a general warning from Environment Southland (ES) that the potentially dangerous algae could be widespresd in Southland Rivers.
The other waterways include The Aparima River near Otautau, Mahers Beach (Waikaia River), Hamilton Burn at Affleck Road and the Waiau River near Excelsior Creek.
ES recommends river users and animals avoid contact with algal mats and remain alert in other parts of these rivers for algal growth or mats of algae floating in the water.
Toxic algae (benthic cyanobacteria) can be recognised at rivers and streams as a green/brown slime on rocks, or dark brown/black mats at the water’s edge.
Anyone experiencing health symptoms after contact with contaminated water should seek immediate medical attention, and animals should be taken to a vet.
