Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) crews at Tiwai Peninsula's large scrub fire will be concentrating on knocking out hotspots, ahead of more forecasted winds in the coming days.
The fire started around midnight on 29th January, and has grown to cover 1,200 hectares, which is almost the same size a similar fire on Awarua Wetland did in 2022.
Incident Controller Hamish Angus said the fire had not grown any further overnight after being contained by the end of yesterday.
There will be 35 firefighters on site today, with support from five helicopters, the Department of Conservation and local forestry companies, he said.
"Our focus today is on knocking out those remaining hotspots," he says.
"We’re expecting winds to pick up over the next few days, so we want to make sure there’s nothing left here that could get the fire under way again."
"It’s too early to say what caused the fire, but we will have fire investigators here today looking into that," Angus said.
