Celebrating Southland Schools

What began with a wave of winter bugs and chills has ended on a high note with happy, successful children enjoying a wide range of learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. A highlight of the term was the Year 6 students' annual Polar Plunge fundraiser, proudly supported by our wonderful families.

This year’s theme was Minecraft, and many Te Anau School tamariki dressed up and braved the icy lake waters. Despite the freezing temperatures, some children swam as if it were just another summer’s day. A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this event such a success. Thank you to those who baked delicious treats, cooked sausages and burgers, the safety crews, and of course, to all our brave plungers.

National Literacy Day was a celebration of stories, imagination, and some seriously creative costumes! From fairy tale favourites to adventurous explorers and clever characters from all kinds of books, our children looked amazing as they brought their favourite stories to life.

A big cheer for our brilliant staff who joined in the fun with fabulous outfits of their own, and created fun literacy based rotations and activities for the children to enjoy. World Literacy Day reminds us how powerful reading can be.

It helps us imagine new worlds, understand others, and even become our favourite characters for a day. Thanks to the support of our fantastic PTA we were lucky enough to spend time at the Event Centre with Spaceward Bound, a NZ company that teaches students about Space. The students were totally engaged with the head sets, planet and star spotting in the dome and the design and function of Curiosity, the rover that was sent to Mars.
