The Stabicraft Te Anau Manapouri Fishing Classic has been confirmed to go ahead this Labour weekend and the organisers hope the popular Fiordland event will kickstart their event season after COVID-19.
It will be held on October 23, 24 and 25 and, in keeping with tradition, a brand new Sabicraft fishing boat will be up grabs for the winner.
However, the Te Anau Community Events Charitable Trust, otherwise known as Te Anau Events, is keen to explore opportunities for including other events around the town at Labour weekend that will complement the fishing competition and provide something for everyone.
Te Anau Community Events Charitable Trust chairman Don McFarlane said the trust was hosting an open meeting at the Te Anau Club at 5.30pm on Tuesday, June 23 to brainstorm other event options to take place for the weekend.
“The meeting is around getting everyone together to share ideas."
He said the organisation knew there were several people with a keen interest in organising other events that could go with the popular fishing competition, but also provide alternative entertainment.
"We're aware that not everyone wants to go fishing," he said.
He said it was important that this year they respond to the challenges of COVID-19 with an open mind and do things a little differently than in the past.
"It's going to be a bit of a different kettle of fish, but we've had some amazing support from the community already."
Mr McFarlane encouraged any members of the community to come along to the meeting on June 23 and share their thoughts and ideas.
He also said Te Anau Events could offer its expertise and support to those coming forward with ideas and who were wanting to host an event.
