There’s no excuses for breaking the rules while boating this summer.
While summer boating is a great family fun activity in the south, it also comes with risks and anybody heading out on the water should be aware of the risks and know the rules to keep themselves and others safe.
Our harbourmasters will be out on the water throughout Southland over summer, rewarding good behaviour and enforcing the rules.
Before heading out:
- Make sure your boat is prepared and well serviced.
- Check all gear on board.
- Ensure sufficient fuel that is not stale.
- Ensure you have appropriately fitted lifejackets for all on board – if you have young children, ensure they still fit.
- Check you have two working forms of communication – VHF radio, EPIRB, flares, cellphone (if coverage permits).
- Let somebody know where you are going and when you intend to return.

When out on the water:
- Know the rules, including those around ski lanes and be aware of the 5 knot speed limit when you are near the shore, swimmers, divers and other boats. Find out more at www.es.govt.nz/boating-rules
- Alcohol and boating don’t mix, keep a clear head. As a skipper you are responsible for all those on board.
- Lifejackets must be worn in vessels 6 metres and under and carried in other vessels over 6 metres and worn at times of heightened risk.

Boaties who break the rules are subject to infringement notices of up to $300, so stay safe and enjoy your boating experience.
