This is an official message from Emergency Management Southland
Emergency Management Southland staff, along with the Southland councils and emergency services are responding to the Red Wind Warning for coastal Southland issued by MetService today.
Emergency Management Southland controller Lucy Hicks said the key message for people across Southland was to stay put in a safe place.
“We’re aware of widespread damage to buildings and fallen trees. If in immediate danger, call 111.”
The wind warning is expected to be in place until 4pm.
A Red Warning means there is a threat to life from flying debris and falling trees. “People should avoid all travel, stay indoors, and prepare for power, water and communication outages.”
Most parks, council facilities and services are closed across the region.
Rural communities are encouraged to conserve water due to power outages which are impacting water treatment plants.
A further update will be issued if the situation changes.
