A reimagined "player of the day" certificate - called the Manawa Tītī award, has been introduced by a number Southland sporting codes.

It is hoped the new award, which includes free passes to Splash Palace, will promote healthier lifestyles for tamariki.

Te Wharekura o Arowhenua principal Gary Davis named the award in honour of the muttonbird's heart, symbolising strength, determination, and whānau connections.

The initiative has already garnered support from nine Southland sports codes, including touch, rugby league, football, cricket, hockey, netball, softball, water polo, and Kī-o-Rahi, with 7,000 passes available in the first year.

Invercargill City Council's Steve Cook praised the program for encouraging healthy living through positive incentives.

"The aquatic centre offers a space for tamariki to create memories with their whānau and friends," he said.

The initiative has received widespread backing from local sports organisations, including Southland Cricket and Southland Football.
