Situation 7:15am Monday 3rd July
Pressures remain low southeast of NZ and a strong windflow covers the country, but the feed of cold air has moved off to the east and a rapid thaw will take place below 600m
A narrow high brings settled frosty weather late in the week, by Saturday another Tasman low looks set to move onto the North Island, the southern region may get a swipe from this by Monday of next week but at present no indication of another snow situation.
Milford Road
The road is currently closed, with reopening approx 0930am after snow & ice clearing. Some delays are possible with snow plough & grit trucks operating. Drive with caution.
A few snow flurries possible near the tunnel until evening, but no significant accumulations expected. Update at 0930am or earlier if conditions change.
Today
Some heavy rain showers in most places, isolated hail. Strong SW winds continue. Snow level 800m
Risk of road icing low, but slippery conditions during the thaw period on snow covered roads.
Overnight lows 3C inland, tomorrow highs 6C
Coastal lows 6C, tomorrow high 9C
Tuesday 4th
Strong SW winds slowly easing, showers lighter and mostly south of a line Otautau to Gore. Some frost well inland, snow level 900m
Wednesday 5th
SW winds look set to continue to ease, with cloud and a few light showers persisting along the coast and into eastern Southland. Frost inland with icy conditions on wet road areas.
Thursday 6th
A like cloudy on the south coast, isolated showers clearing. Frosty again at night.
Outlook
Fine and frosty on Friday, some high cloud over the weekend but rain looks like staying north of the lower South Island.
