Southland is currently experiencing a prolonged cold southerly blast of rain and snow that has led to closed roads and schools, and added extra stress to the province's farmers - who are currently in the middle of calving and lambing.

Southland Rural Support Trust chairperson Simon Hopcroft said Spring's four to six week production period was so important to the farming system, particularly in the sheep sector and lamb survival.

However most people were well and truly over the weather, he said.

"We're constantly looking at that forecast and going - when's this going to break."

"The reality is, as soon as that sun comes out everyone's spirits will lift. And [also] seeing a forecast that lasts longer than a day of sunshine," Hopcroft said.

Hopcroft, who farms at Gummies Bush, said he thought farmers had coped ok.

"But please reach out [to the Southland Rural Support Trust on 0800 787 254] if you are getting foggy in the mind and wanting to connect with support."

"We can absolutely get that sorted," he said.

Invercargill MP Penny Simmonds added her support to Southland farmers currently experiencing exceptionally difficult weather conditions at their busiest time of year.

“I just want farmers to know that they have my support - we are incredibly appreciative of their hard work and tenacity - and all that they contribute to our province and our country," Simmonds said.

"Here in Southland, the excessive rainfall has led to over-saturated ground, resulting in flooded paddocks and a rapid deterioration in soil conditions turning to mud, and causing feed supply shortages for some."

"Farmers have been facing the dual challenge of managing calving and lambing while contending with these relentless wet conditions and weather events."

"Many are working long hours and are exhausted from the ongoing struggle, with some farmers saying the current conditions are some of the worst seen in two decades."

"In particular, I am concerned about the younger farmers, sharemilkers, and contract milkers who may be facing these severe weather conditions for the first time."

"I urge anyone in need of support or advice to reach out to their neighbours or to local farming networks," she said.

Simmonds said data from Environment Southland yesterday indicates that rainfall in certain areas, including places like Mossburn, Riversdale, Five Rivers and Oreti, have reached over 200 percent above the long-term average for September, with the month still only half-way through,

“That’s double the average rainfall in just over two weeks - and today there’s been snow."

“In top of that, in August, some parts of the province had already been hit by above-average rainfall - serving only to compound the challenging conditions."

"In addition to the adverse weather, farmers are also grappling with low lamb prices, high interest rates, and staffing issues, all of which are contributing to heightened stress and mental health challenges," Simmonds said.

"It is crucial to remember that support is available."

"I encourage anyone feeling overwhelmed to contact the Southland Rural Support Trust at 0800 787 254."

"A problem shared is a problem halved, and seeking help is an important step in navigating these difficult times."

"Rural Support and MPI are also running 'Brunch on Us' events around the province this month, to bring farmers together for food, conversation and support.”
