A restricted fire season was declared for Southland at 8am this morning (20 Dec) by Fire and Emergency Southland District Manager Julian Tohiariki.
The declaration covers both the Southland and Gore Districts, including Invercargill city.
Tohiariki said a wetter and warmer spring has resulted in an increased amount of vegetation that is readily available to burn.
“There are strong winds, warmer temperatures, and below average rainfall in the forecast for Southland, which all lead to vegetation drying out quickly and creating a fast-moving fire."
“We’ve seen fires that were thought to be extinguished reignite from strong winds in the past, and we don’t want to see that this summer."
“Even if you do obtain a fire permit, you should always check the conditions at before lighting."
“You should also make sure your fire is completely extinguished before leaving it unattended, especially if the wind picks up,” Tohiariki said.
