Toted as a world first, the southernmost brewery and the southernmost hop garden have jointed forces to produce the southernmost beer.
The beer, an extra pale ale, is the brainchild of Bluff husband and wife team Vicki Tarker-Jones (aka Vicki Purple) and Tom Jones.
Jones has been brewing since the mid–80’s, and for 6 years from 1998 worked at Emerson’s Brewery in Dunedin.
The hops have been grown in the couple's commercial hop garden at St Augustine, Tuapeka Mouth, while 4 Mates Brewery at Otatara have brewed the beer.
The beverage will be launched in Bluff, with the opening of a 50 litre keg, on Saturday 30th April at the Eagle Hotel.
Proceeds from the keg will go towards "Tea Time - Me Time", a charity started by Tarker-Jones, to support nurses.
Tarker-Jones, who is also a nurse, educator and counsellor, said Tea Time - Me Time raises funds to buy biscuits, cakes and more plus we collect cups, saucers and plates for gift bags filled with goodies for morning and afternoon teas for nurses.
"It acknowledges the work that they do, and it’s all about nurses taking a break to focus on some relaxing time over a cuppa,” Tarker-Jones said.
