Invercargill, Gore and Southland districts have middling vaccination rates, heading into Super Saturday.

Some 57.6% of Invercargill's 46,000-strong eligible population are fully vaccinated, having had two shots of Pfizer / Biotech's Covid-19 vaccine.

A further 20.1% have had just one dose of the vaccine, so far. That leaves 22.3% completely unvaccinated.

It's a similar picture in Gore, where 56.8% of the 10,700 eligible population are fully vaccinated, 17.9% have had just one dose, leaving 25.3% unvaccinated.

Across Southland district, 49% of the 25,000 eligible population are fully vaccinated, with 25.1% having had just one dose, and 25.9% are unvaccinated.

Dunedin tops the table for the percentage of people who are fully vaccinated, with 69% of its 110,500 eligible population having had both jabs. 19% have had just one, and 12% are unvaccinated.

Invercargill is 22nd in that table, while Gore is 29th and Southland is languishing in 55th, of New Zealand's 66 district council areas.

And Queenstown Lakes leads the way in New Zealand for the smallest percentage of people who are completely unvaccinated.

Some 61.9% of its 35,000 people aged 12+ are fully vaccinated, but a further 29.8% have had one dose. That means, just 8.3% completely unvaccinated.

Invercargill is 33rd in NZ in that regard (22.35 unvaccinated), while Gore and Southland are 45th and 46th, respectively.

About 70 vaccination sites will be open across the Southern District Health Board area on Super Saturday, October 16, offering walk-in vaccinations and the opportunity to talk through any questions people might have.

A full list of sites is available on: www.southernhealth.nz/covid19/super-saturday.

The Southern COVID-19 vaccination programme is aiming to vaccinate at least 90% of its 12+ population by Christmas and programme lead Hamish Brown is urging everyone to take the opportunity to get protected now so we can all get back to the things we love.

"We have been so pleased with the public response to the vaccine and the hard work of all our healthcare workers on the ground who have kept up with demand, especially under the recent restrictions," he said.

"We are now getting into the last push to protect our population and urge everyone who hasn’t yet received their vaccine to take the opportunity to now, not only to protect themselves, but to protect their whānau and wider community – especially those who are unable to get the vaccine themselves such as children under 12."

To date, 83.9% of the whole Southern district over 12 have had at least one dose of the vaccine and 61.4% are fully vaccinated.

Walk-in appointments are now available at mass vaccination centres in Dunedin and Invercargill, and vaccinating pharmacies across the district. Other providers may also be in a position to offer walk-in appointments and will advertise these locally.

The vaccine is free and available to everyone in New Zealand over the age of 12, regardless of immigration status, and there is enough vaccine for everyone to get their vaccine by the end of the year.
