Gorge Hill, which is the natural boundary between Northern Southland and the Te Anau basin, covered in snow yesterday. Photo: NZTAState Highway 96's Gorge Hill is reported passable with caution, by Waka Kotahi contractor South Roads, as at 6am (11 May 2023).
However it is still snowing heavily on the hill with about 10-12 inches of snow settling.
They report the Te Anau side of Gorge Hill is worse than the Mossburn side. Once road users are over Gorge Hill in the direction of toward Mossburn, the weather is clearing up and they have a good run.
South Roads has 3 ploughs and a grit truck onsite to try and keep the road open.
Please drive with caution and using good judgement.
