Emergency Management Southland has issued an Orange heavy rain warning today (26 Jul) for Fiordland, from Bligh Sound to Resolution Island.
The severe weather warning is from 8pm Friday (today) till 1pm Saturday.
Forecasters expect rainfall of between 120 to 160 mm with peaks of between 10 - 20 mm/h on Saturday morning.
Another period of heavy rain is possible Saturday night.
Streams and rivers may rise rapidly, causing surface flooding and slips.
A front, preceded by a moist northerly flow, is expected to affect the lower South Island on Friday night and during Saturday.
The front brings rain to the west and south of the South Island, with the heaviest falls likely in Fiordland.
A Heavy Rain Warning has been issued for central Fiordland, and Rain Watches remain in force for northern and southern parts of Fiordland.
