The driver of the vehicle that crashed on Gorge Road- Invercargill Highway is in Dunedin Hospital with critical injuries, while police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the early morning accident.

Southern Police briefly reopened the road this morning but closed it again about 11am to allow Serious Crash Unit investigators do their work.

The driver was the sole occupant of the car and was flown to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter.

No other vehicle was involved in the accident, which occurred about 6.15am.

Diversions are in place at Kapuka North Road and Seaward Downs Road.

The road was expected to remain closed for a few hours.
