Rowing club's corporate race returns after Covid-hiatus

After a two-year Covid-enforced break, the Waihopai Rowing Club’s Corpor8 event is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

The popular corporate rowing event, supported by iHire and a range of other sponsors, is the Oreti River-based club’s major fundraising effort for the year.

Corpor8 committee chair Garry Froude was excited about the chance to introduce some new people to the sport of rowing, and welcome back some familiar faces from past events.

"It would be nice to get some of those businesses back who have been involved for a long time to help celebrate 20 years.

"We are thinking about different ways that we can celebrate the milestone so there could be some surprises in store."

Registrations are open now and close on Friday, September 2, although Froude urged anyone who was interested in being involved to contact him.

A background in rowing was not necessary to take part, in fact registered rowers were not able to compete, Froude said.

All crews were limited to eight on-water sessions to ensure a level playing field.

The event includes an indoor racing night at James Hargest College and the big finals day on the Oreti River on November 12.

Froude said Corpor8 was an ideal opportunity for businesses looking for ways to build staff culture, especially after Covid lockdowns.

"It’s a great event for bringing teams together and it’s really social. We try and keep it as social as we can."
