The Ronald McDonald (RMHC) Family Room is celebrating 10 years providing essential support for families with children in Southland Hospital.

Since its opening on December 12, 2013, over 1200 families have stayed at the facility with thousands more day guests finding a place to have a rest and recharge. 

Connected directly to the Children’s and Neo Natal wards, the Family Room is more than just an extension of the hospital; it’s a haven where families can momentarily forget the clinical surroundings and find a homely atmosphere.

RMHC NZ Family Room Supervisor Helen Walker has personally met almost every family that has stayed and ensures the space remains warm and comforting..

“Every one of those families has had a unique journey with their child in hospital, but the key purpose of our role has always remained the same."

"It’s based around us taking care of daily necessities to allow families the ability to focus on their child.” 

Community Advisor, Ang Simpson said the role of local volunteers and supporters had been pivotal in achieving the milestone.

“We rely largely on support from the community to keep our doors open for families that need us."

"Community support enables us to operate, so this is a milestone for Southland to celebrate together,” Simpson said.
