Riversdale Arts is gearing up for its grandest Mixed Media Arts Exhibition yet as the group prepares to mark 50 years of art in Northern Southland.

From 21st - 30th July the small Southland town of Riversdale will come alive with a vibrant display of artistic talent from all over the country.

However the origins of the exhibition were born half a century earlier when a group of passionate locals recognised the need for artistic expression and connection in their community.

With limited access to art and cultural events they took matters into their own hands and formed Riversdale Arts.

What began as art and painting classes, eventually led to the inception of the Mixed Media Arts Exhibition, which today attracts artists and visitors from throughout the province and country.

Local artist and Riversdale Arts Past President Christine O'Connor said it all started in the old drill hall before moving, over 40 years ago, to the then newly built community centre.

"This allowed us to host larger exhibitions and invite guest artists from all over New Zealand, offering a unique experience to our visitors," she said.

The Riversdale Arts Mixed Media Arts Exhibition stands out among others due to its diverse range of artwork.

From pottery to woodwork, paintings to sculptures, the exhibition showcases an array of artistic styles and mediums.

"We always strive to bring something new and different to our audience," O'Connor said, with organisers attending exhibitions throughout the country to discover new artists and ensure a fresh and varied selection each year.

This year, in celebration of its 50th anniversary, the exhibition takes a unique approach.

Instead of featuring a single guest artist, the event will showcase the works of the past 10 years' guest artists.

They include Raquel Clarke, Trevor Askin, Odelle Morshuis, Stephen Martyn Welch, Janet de Wagt, Tanith Hawker, Jacky Pearson, Jocelynne Bacci, Lou Mathieson, Renate Karena and others, who will each contribute standout pieces.

Visitors can expect a wide range of artworks that cater to various tastes and budgets.

There's something for everyone, from small affordable pieces to larger awe-inspiring works.

One of the exhibition's highlights is the involvement of the local Balfour, Waikaia, Riversdale, and Otama schools, along with four preschools, who will each have their own displays.

A special feature for the 50th title "What lifts you, What Makes You Fly?", children will create feathered wings, adorned with drawings that represent what brings them joy.

It promises to be a memorable interactive experience, allowing kids to express themselves creatively and share their stories.

In addition to the exhibition, Riversdale Arts offers an array of workshops to nurture and inspire creativity.

These are immensely popular and often sell out quickly, so early registration is recommended.

Workshops include floral art, wire sculpture, cheese making and macramé, with more on the agenda.

Riversdale Arts and Imagination Gin have produced a Limited Edition Gin Bottle to celebrate the special occasion!

Throughout the exhibit period a gift shop runs concurrently. From here you can purchase items that can be taken on the day - there is a wide variety of art and craft items for sale.

You also can't miss a visit to the YUM Cafe which is a pop-up cafe on site, run by the Balfour home and school committee, providing excellent coffee, lunches and morning/afternnoon teas.

The Riversdale Arts 50th celebrations kick off on July 21st with a reunion luncheon at the Croydon Lodge.

The 50th annual Mixed Media Arts Exhibition will open at 6pm on Friday, Jul 21st with a gala evening

Thereafter the exhibition will be open daily to the public from 11am to 5pm.

The exhibition closes at 3pm on Sunday 30th July.
