Police have today released the name of the woman who was found dead at a Te Anau motel on Friday.
She was Shirley Alaina Reedy, 52, of Balclutha.
Over the weekend police said they had received information about 6.35pm on Friday to suggest a person had died in the area. Police made inquiries before attending the Explorer Motel and Apartments in Cleddau Street, where the victim was located, deceased
A 52-year-old man was arrested and appeared in the Invercargill District Court on Saturday (May 16th) charged with murder. He has been remanded in custody without plea until June 9.
Detective Sergeant Mark McCloy said the pair, who were visitors to Te Anau, were known to one another.
The investigation team is not seeking anyone else in relation to Shirley's death.
"We appreciate this incident has been unsettling for some local Te Anau residents. As a consequence we want to acknowledge both the Te Anau and wider communities."
