A Police investigation is underway and the Independent Police Conduct Authority will be notified, following the shooting of a man by Police at Dacre yesterday (Saturday 19 March).

Details released today show Police received a report around 9.15am yesterday from a concerned female, relating to an alleged family harm incident at a rural address west of Invercargill. 

Police attended, but after finding neither offender or victim present, proceeded to attempt to locate both people reportedly involved.

When Police arrived at the alleged offender’s address about 11:25am, the male got in a vehicle and rammed a Police car before fleeing the scene.

He and his vehicle were located stopped a short time later on State Highway 1 near Dacre.

The male, who was in possession of a modified firearm, confronted motorists, breaking the window of one vehicle and attempting to enter another.

He then presented a knife and came toward Police, before being shot by an officer shortly before midday.

Officers on the scene immediately rendered medical attention before the male, in a serious condition, was transported by ambulance to hospital.

Police report today (Sunday 20th March) the man remains in a serious but stable condition.

No officers or members of the public were injured in the incident and Police later confirmed that the woman involved is safe and well.

Welfare support has been offered to the Police officer who discharged their weapon, their family, other officers who attended along with members of the public involved in the incident.

State Highway 1 at Dacre was closed on Saturday afternoon for a scene examination, but reopened on Sunday afternoon.
